A brief
history of anime art
Anime or Animation and even
gay anime movies, all owe their
roots in early American and European cartoons dating back to
cartoons in the early 1900's, such as Felix the Cat.
Adopting their own story telling style, the Japanese began
telling their own stories, fables, and dramas telling the
stories of Japanese folk tales. Early anime was a hobbiest's
realm, and many, working from home
in their own small art studios, created some of the first
Japanese Anime videos. The early Anime films were short
reels of only a few minutes, but were enough to seed the
fascination among the Japanese population for Animation art.
There were some early productions financed by some japanese
production companies but the anime art movement would not
get it's real spurt of growth until after World War II.
During this time, anime was once again relegated to home
studios and underfunded artists, hampered further by the
ultra slow recovery of the Japanese economy after World War
II. The first real Japanese anime video did not get produced
until 1955 but competed directly against the more
experienced, better financed, and
more polished American studios animation videos. This
competiton caused the Japanese to adopt a more American
style of production.
Independent anime artists in Japan continued to flourish but
the more commercialized projects were handled by a studio
production
arrangement similar to the way the American animation
artists worked.

Toei Animation studio was opened in 1956
with it's lead animator, Yasuji Mori, with their first production,
Doodling Kitty, a year later. Panda and the Magic Serpent, which was
released in 1958 was the Japanese first real foray into professional
studio animations. This studio
seems to have followed the Walt Disney Studios production style and
then distributed in the USA. The release of the first Japanese anime
videos in the US market were not well received and as such,
disappeared from distribution in the American market for the next
two decades. A young Japanese artist, Osamu Tezuka, at this
time was the artist behind Japan's most popular comic strip credited
with essentially creating the Japanese manga art industry. Working
as a consultant on Alkazam the Great, Tezuka became fascinated with
animation and he switched his energies and creative efforts from
comic books and strips to anime. His title, Astro Boy, is now
credited with being the launching production that really put
Japanese anime on the global map as a serious contender.
As the genre matured, more and more themes and styles of anime began
to take hold, including fantasy, science fiction, and space travel.
As artists began exploring more taboo story lines, a
gay form of
anime began to appear. This artform began appearing in the 1970's
and was first called shounen-ai, or Yaoi, meaning boy-boy love.
Girls were the first consumers of this genre of anime, but it soon
found a foot hold with the gay market with it's steamy tales of boy
on boy love and sex.
Gay anime video is still among the most scarce of anime that is
available in the market worldwide. The high cost of production for
an anime title and the perceived limited market for distribution has
kept the development of gay anime videos far behind the production
of anime videos for the straight market.
